A Candid Conversation to Change India's Business Environment

New Delhi, Delhi, India

Chalein Saath Saath: Forward Together We Go” is the expression jointly crafted as India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, completed his trip four months ago to see U.S. President, Barack Obama, in Washington - and the basis for the title of a candid discussion in New Delhi on 27th January 2015, coinciding with President Obama’s historical trip to India’s capital.

However, with India ranked 142 in the World Bank’s 2015 scale for ease of “Doing Business” - down two places from 2014 - many questions remain about what concrete steps Prime Minister Modi plans to take to achieve his ambitious goal of placing India in the top 50.

Today’s event, Forward Together We Go – Chalein Saath Saath: Shaping Policy and Sharing Best Practices for a Shared Future, aims to examine the obstacles and explore the potential for cross-border business, and is presented by leading law firm, Dechert LLP and Thomson Reuters with the support of the ABA India Committee and the U.S.-India Business Council.

A panel of distinguished business leaders and experienced legal counsel explore the challenges facing business in India, particularly in growing cross-border collaborations, and in enhancing the regulatory and policy frameworks to allow better business practices, so that India and the U.S. may “realize the full potential of our economic relationship”, to use President Obama’s words at the India-US Business Summit held last night.

It’s important that we are more candid and more collaborative than ever before in our discussions, so that we can help enable the shared vision articulated by Prime Minister Modi and President Obama. Best practices have to be shared – and the Amerian Bar Association is there to help, emphasized the event Organizer and Moderator, Ms. Asma Chandani, Chair of the ABA India Policy and Rule of Law Sub-Committees, and a leading U.S. private equity and corporate lawyer, representing Dechert LLP in India.

Ms. Chandani will be presenting today’s discussion as a roadmap for further dialogue at the International Spring Meeting of the American Bar Association in Washington, DC, in April this year.
