Goodyear in India and SOS Children’s Villages of India have launched a “Rebuilding Lives – Relief and Rehabilitation” project to assist the rebuilding efforts following the devastating floods that recently affected the Jammu and Kashmir region.
The assistance will ensure ongoing relief to 248 flood impacted beneficiaries of 108 families by providing start-up kits and nutrition support over the period of four months. This will be undertaken in two of the worst flood affected areas of Srinagar: Saidakadal and Khushalsar.
In September 2014, the Jammu and Kashmir received torrential rainfall, which caused catastrophic floods resulting in significant loss of property, livestock and household items. The floods caused 284 fatalities in India, and according to the Home Ministry of India, affected more than 2,600 villages.
“We express our sincere condolences and sympathy to the victims, their families and all those affected by the flooding,” said Mr. Rajeev Anand, vice chairman & managing director of Goodyear in India. “Since this tragic event occurred, communities in the Srinagar area have required ongoing support for basic necessities, such as food. With assistance from SOS Children’s Villages of India, we aim to continue the relief support for families and individuals as they work on rebuilding their lives.”
SOS Children’s Villages of India runs a Family Strengthening Program in Srinagar, and in response to the flooding, has also been working with local communities to ensure the sustainability of affected families through an Income Generation Program. Additionally, SOS Children’s Villages of India is focused on ensuring that children in the flood affected areas continue to enjoy their fundamental rights to education, food and adequate protection and care.
“With the support of Goodyear in India, SOS Children’s Villages of India has been able to launch the “Rebuilding Lives – Relief and Rehabilitation” project to provide additional support to flood victims and ensure ongoing relief to families in need in the valley of Srinagar,” said Mr. Rakesh Jinsi, secretary general, SOS Children’s Villages of India. “With this project, we can now further extend our efforts to help alleviate the effects of this devastating disaster.”
