A recently conducted survey by GFK Mode, a market research firm, brings to light the concerns of Indian mothers towards the prevalence of cavities amongst children. This survey was commissioned by Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited, the market leader in Oral Care. The research reveals, which dentists agree with - two food varieties – modern day foods and everyday foods – are reasons that cause cavities.
78% mothers voiced concerns that everyday foods like dal, dalia – otherwise considered healthy – can cause cavities too.
The study also highlights the acute need for superior Oral Care in the country. 98% dentists who were interviewed as part of the survey agreed that children need higher level of Oral Care to cope with changing food habits.
Consumer Concerns for Cavities Salient Findings
Modern and everyday foods cause cavities
- 94% dentists agree that modern day foods like burgers, pizza, etc. are major reasons causing cavities
- 78% mothers agree that everyday foods like dal, dalia can cause cavities
Changing food habits of children - 96% dentists agree that the kind of food children eat these days lead to higher incidence of cavities
- 88% dentists agree that the incidence of cavities nowadays is higher than before
- 86% mothers agree that cavities is a bigger problem now than when they were kids
Consequence of cavities on daily life - 90% mothers agree that when their child has pain due to cavities, she/he is not able to attend school
Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Hon. Secretary General, Indian Dental Association said, “As lifestyle evolves with time, there is also a change in the eating habits of children. This change in the foods that children eat today significantly contributes to cavities as seen in the research findings. The survey also aptly highlights a need for higher level of Oral Care in the country as children become more inclined towards eating foods such as burgers and pizzas. You will be surprised to know that even daily foods like rice, dal, fruits can cause cavities. Its important for children to be made aware of basics of oral hygiene like the importance of brushing teeth twice a day, cleaning teeth and gums properly with toothpastes that offer advanced cavity protection.”
Besides modern and everyday food items, it was also found in the research that children eating chocolates continues to add to mothers’ woes. Nearly 90% mothers agreed that sweets, candies and chocolates can lead to cavities.
As part of the research design, the quantitative data was obtained through face to face interviews with mothers and through telephonic interviews with dentists, conducted in April 2014 across markets.
