Need for High-quality Process Water and Better Wastewater Treatment Regulations Increase the Demand for Membrane Modules in India, finds Frost & Sullivan
Reverse Osmosis Systems Expected to Replace Conventional Systems
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Friday, December 13, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- Water scarcity in India, aggravated by the inefficient water management strategies of industries, is compelling industry players to change their water usage and treatment methods. Industries want high quality process water as well as wastewater treatment systems for compliance with regulations. The rising population and per capita consumption of water also necessitates increased water treatment. The resulting growth in wastewater treatment, recycle and reuse practices will accelerate the deployment of membrane modules across application sectors.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan ( http://www.environmental.frost.com), Indian Market for Membrane Modules, finds that the market earned revenues of INR 6, 000 million in 2012, which is estimated to more than double and reach INR 12,975 million by 2017. The study covers the segments of reverse osmosis (RO), ultra filtration, membrane bio-reactor, micro filtration and nano filtration membranes. The major end users include municipal, industrial, commercial and residential segments as well as domestic water purifiers.
RO membrane systems are the most commonly used technology in large municipal desalination projects and industrial high-purity water projects. The country's dependence on RO systems has further increased on the heels of booming commercial and residential projects in city outskirts that are devoid of municipal piped water networks.
"The Indian market for membrane modules for water and wastewater treatment applications is currently on a high-growth trajectory with conventional systems such as filtration and demineralization giving way to RO systems, particularly in the power and food and beverage segments," says Frost & Sullivan's Environment & Building Technologies Research Analyst. "RO-based water purifiers too are rapidly replacing traditional solutions such as boiling and ultra violet systems."
However, a section of cost-conscious end users are turning towards low-cost treatment systems such as filtration and disinfection systems due to the lax enforcement of wastewater treatment standards. This practice is particularly prevalent among the residential customers, who are already burdened by high maintenance costs. The resulting impact on the environment and membrane modules market warrants fast action from market participants. Educating end users about the long-term cost advantage of membrane modules over conventional systems can help ease this challenge.
"Going forward, long-term working relationships with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) of water purification systems and engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contractors will be crucial to enhance market development and bring in repeat business. Market participants must also invest in marketing and R&D to stay ahead of the competition", concluded the analyst.
