Frost & Sullivan: Need for Compliance with Global Accreditation Standards Drives Indian Calibration and Repair Services Market
Service providers must offer high-end calibration facilities to enhance growth prospects
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Friday, December 20, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- Growing quality consciousness among consumers coupled with a preference for accredited manufacturers is driving the demand for calibration services among companies in India. Rapid industrial growth and increasing focus on quality and need for parity with international standards are also fuelling the growth of calibration and repair services.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.testandmeasurement.frost.com), Calibration and Repair Services Market in India, finds that the total market earned revenues of $103.1 million in 2012 and estimates this to reach $247.6 million in 2019. While the calibration market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 14.5 percent during this period, the repairs market will see a CAGR of 6.2 percent. This study covers the electro-technical, mechanical, thermal and fluid flow/optical calibration segments. Currently, electro-technical calibration and repair services make up the largest segment of the market.
"The calibration segment is expected to achieve a good growth rate due to the increasing awareness about quality among the end-user industries and consumers thereby translating into the need to have measurement accuracy, traceable to the international standards," said Frost & Sullivan Analyst. "As companies from a wide range of industries aim to become ISO-certified, the market potential for calibration service providers is widening."
Given the burgeoning demand, existing service providers, third-party service providers (TSP), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), government laboratories, and in-house laboratories appear to be insufficient in handling the surging demand. Further, facilities for high-end and master instrument calibration are inadequate in India. Only government laboratories are presently capable of calibrating sophisticated systems. As a result, a significant portion of end users send their high-end instruments abroad for calibration, thus increasing the downtime of their equipment which though a challenge, presents in itself the opportunity for such services locally.
"The outsourcing of these services to European countries will gradually reduce as service providers begin importing the infrastructure to calibrate high-end instruments and master equipment," noted the analyst. "These advanced measurement facilities will decrease the dependence on government laboratories that require high turnaround time to return the equipments after calibration."
However, to ensure steady expansion, calibration service providers must concentrate on developing awareness on the importance of quality instruments with an accurate measurement range. This will also help counter the low price trends introduced by small-scale calibration laboratories targeting companies that focus on merely clearing audit trials rather than the quality of calibration.
"Repair services market in India too is expected to witness steady growth as the preference to replace faulty parts is more pronounced in high-end equipments where new spares are used to replace faulty parts," added the analyst. These services are performed by OEMs, as third-party service providers have neither the spare parts nor the relevant expertise.
