Frost & Sullivan - Electro-chlorination to Take Top Spot in Water and Wastewater Disinfection Systems Market in India
Price Sensitivity Compels Participants to Offer One-Stop Shop Solution

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, December 23, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- The increasing difficulty in meeting the growing water demand of industries in India is necessitating optimization of available water resources. Public pressure on industries to treat their effluents is also increasing; at the same time industries have become conscious about the quality of water and therefore, are adopting advanced disinfection systems to enhance its quality. Initiatives to improve water supply and sanitation for the expanding population too are on the rise. Such endeavors are providing increasing growth opportunities for players in the water and wastewater disinfection systems market.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.environmental.frost.com), Analysis of Water and Wastewater Disinfection Systems Market in India, finds that the market earned revenues of INR 3, 268 million in 2012 and estimates this to reach INR 5, 079.8 million in 2017. The study covers technologies including electro-chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) systems, and ozone systems, across commercial, industrial and municipal segments.

Electro-chlorination has replaced gas chlorination technology as the dominant disinfection system in the country due to its proven efficiency in disinfecting water. Apart from its efficiency, easy availability of raw materials such as salt/sea water and electricity, onsite generation of Sodium Hypo Chlorite (SHC), and easy operative procedure also drive the demand for electro-chlorination systems. However, UV and ozone are becoming popular and are expected to further enlarge this market over the next ten years. Ozone systems are used more in bottled water industries for water treatment and swimming pools for sewage treatment. The restraining factors for ozone systems are its high operating costs. With increasing technology/product improvement in UV systems and decreasing costs, the UV systems market is expected to grow at a steady rate.

Most of the demand for water and wastewater disinfection systems in India is expected from the power, oil and gas as well as food and beverage industries. Power industry utilizes disinfection systems for condenser and heat exchanger fouling protection, while oil and gas industry installs disinfection systems to prevent marine growth. Apart from industries, municipalities also offer good business potential for disinfection systems.

"Disinfection systems, though small in market size, has the potential to register high growth rates in the future because of its extensive applications in bottled water sector, food and beverage, hotels, hospitals and other institutions. Demand for highly pure water in these sectors is expected to boost the demand for such systems", said Sasidhar Chidanamarri, Industry Manager, Environment & Building Technologies Practice, Frost & Sullivan. The supply of clean water for both domestic and industrial applications is increasingly gaining importance as the Government has realized that sustainable development can only be achieved through a balanced blend of energy, economy and environment. Consequently, municipalities and industries are investing in water and wastewater treatment infrastructure such as disinfection systems.

The markets for other disinfection technologies such as forward osmosis, hybrid desalination, and solar desalination etc. will also get a leg up from the rising demand for energy-efficient processes. These technologies are likely to be pushed into the mainstream as consumers become increasingly aware of the adverse effects of incumbent technologies such as chlorination tablets and gas chlorination. Evolving regulations too will encourage the uptake of sustainable water disinfection technologies. For instance, a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) directive mandates that chlorine concentration in tap water not exceed 0.2 mg/l as it could be carcinogenic. However, the implementation of such supportive laws and regulations has been slow, hence it may not have immediate impact on the market growth of water disinfection technologies in the short to medium term.

"For the water and wastewater disinfection systems market to live up to its promise immediately, participants need to pay heed to the price consciousness of end users, since the upfront cost of these technologies is high and the pay back period long," noted Chidanamarri. "They will do well to consolidate their market position by offering a one-stop shop that features not only a diverse product portfolio but also operations and maintenance services at competitive prices."

Participants can also optimize their investments through competitive sourcing of components and strategic tie-ups with water Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Furthermore, vendors with considerable expertise, offering prompt after-sales service and ensuring lower operational costs, are most likely to gain acceptance in the Indian water and wastewater disinfection systems market.
