Partnership for total implementation of conformance testing and certification for suppliers as per ESMA regulations

Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Wednesday, October 23, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- UL, a premier safety science company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UAE's sole certification authority, Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). With this MoU, UL will be recognized and authorized by ESMA to conduct complete conformity assessment, testing, inspection and market surveillance methodologies and requirements for certification of safety and energy efficiency products in the UAE.

Under the MoU, UL's test facilities will be authorized to conduct testing of products for safety certification and energy efficiency labeling as per ESMA regulations. Currently there are 16 products under regulation for safety, covering 32 standards and 4 for energy efficiency. The products include electric storage, water heaters, electric irons, microwave ovens, room air conditioners and more such electrical and gas appliances.

According to Mr. Suresh Sugavanam, MD and VP, UL South Asia, "We at UL, are constantly identifying avenues to support global customers through our technological expertise, backed by more than a century of experience in safety testing, certification and standards development. Through our partnership with ESMA, which entails not only testing, but complete conformity assessment, inspection and market surveillance methodologies, we expect to accelerate the process of market acceptance for manufacturers and suppliers to the UAE."

Speaking on the agreement, Mr. E. Mohammed Saleh Badri, Director General, ESMA, UAE said , "Improving market transparency, promoting fair competition and ensuring product quality and safety has been the driving force of ESMA's commitment to manufacturers and consumers in the UAE. We acknowledge UL's worldwide expertise and understanding of conformity assessment requirements, inspection and certification requirements in totality and our partnership with them is a step forward in expanding our product portfolio to regulate the import and manufacture of safety and energy efficiency products in the UAE. We hope to leverage on their worldwide presence to facilitate the certification program for suppliers across the globe."

ESMA was established in 2001 as a standardization body in the UAE, formulating standards for products as per regulatory guidelines in the country. ESMA issues two types of certificates - the mandatory Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS) and the voluntary Emirates Quality mark (EQM) to local and imported products which have to be verified for compliance against national standards. ESMA issues policy and regulations on standards while implementation of the standards and certification process is outsourced to third party certification organizations.
