Akshaya Patra Awarded for its Service During the Flood Relief Efforts in Jaipur
Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, Thursday, October 11, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The district Administration of Jaipur recognized the services of The Akshaya Patra Foundation during the recent floods in Jaipur. Over 50,000 meals were served by Akshaya Patra to flood survivors as part of the relief programme. Sri. Naveen Mahajan, District Collector of Jaipur awarded a certificate of appreciation to Rathnangada Dasa, Unit President - Akshaya Patra Jaipur, who received the honour on behalf of the Foundation.
Heavy rains in the month of August saw the city face havoc of flash floods. Thousands were rendered homeless and a few people were also killed in the heavy downpour. The Akshaya Patra Foundation in response to the request by the local administration distributed free food in the disaster prone areas from August 22 to September 8, 2012.
Food was distributed in the low lying areas of Jaipur in more than 12 colonies such as Bhatta Basti, Shastri Nagar, Jahawar Nagar, Transport Nagar, Girdharipura, Muhana mandi, Madraampura, Nahargrah, Parwati nagar, Bagrana, Dausa, Bagru, Galta gate among other areas. The Akshaya Patra distribution vans were stationed near the water logged areas while food was manually shifted to the affected places. The officers from the food & civil supplies department, police and district administration guided the relief operation.
Salim Khan, a nineteen-year-old mobile mechanic living in Jawahar Nagar, was one of the thousands of people affected by the flood. His house was brutally damaged by rains. The kitchen was damaged to an extent that the meals could not be cooked. Akshaya Patra food that was provided for his family was the sole source of food for the eleven-member family. For people like Suruti Bai and Vimla Bai the two widows living in Madrampura, Shyam Karan Thapa a migrant worker and thousand others the Akshaya Patra meal was their only meal during those 18 days.
