Lex Witness Presents India's First Ever Media, Advertising & Entertainment Legal Summit 2012
Put to light the Legal, Regulatory & Compliance issues affecting the fraternity

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, September 27, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The capital today hosted its first ever Media, Advertising & Entertainment Legal Summit (MAELS) 2012 at Hotel Le Meridien. A pioneering initiative commenced and conceptualized by Lex Witness - India's first Magazine on Legal and Corporate Affairs presented an ideal platform to media professionals, industry specialists and stakeholders to come together and share their knowledge, thoughts and experiences. During the daylong convention, discussion on wide range of challenges that is affecting today's changing media environment took place.

The forum gained momentum with the presence of the Hon'ble Minister of Law & Justice, Mr. Salman Khurshid, who said He also accepted that there has been a considerable debate about media impact, advertising and entertainment industry in the context of legal implications and regulations keeping in mind its crucial public interest.

The new amendment to the Copyright Act of 1957 highlights a fresh era for the Media, Advertising & Entertainment fraternity in particular as it seeks to protect the rights of authors for their literary works like scripts, lyrics or musical works and grant them an equal share in the royalties earned from exploiting their creations. The move also brings in moral rights for performers, statutory licenses for broadcasting organizations like radio and television, compulsory licensing for foreign works and copyright society for administering performers' rights and broadcasting rights. As the impact of these revisions sunk into the minds of stakeholders, they thoroughly discussed and examined the prospects of all the alterations that might come into effect in consequence.

Speaking in regards to the legal sphere of influence, PBA Srinivasan, Editor-in-Chief, Lex Witness said "The changes in the Copyright bill have been made to bring the home laws at par with the international treaties. However there are some legal ambiguities in the act in relation to the disbursement of the royalties which need to be stressed out. Moreover, as the self regulation and regulatory bodies play an important role in the media and broadcasting business, hence discussion over the present bottle necks and suggesting reforms for the same became the need of the hour."

The discussion initiated with interpreting the changes and its impact focusing on the rights of the author, composer, performer & broadcaster with a special emphasis on Royalty Payments. Emerging implications of the new competition law in the industry, convergence of technology and the legal issues related to it because of the digitalization and the new technologies entering into market, contract management & arbitration in Media business, analyzing compliance challenges faced by Media, Advertising and Entertainment Industry were other important topics for discussion at the Summit.
