Citi Volunteers in India Commemorate Company's 200th Anniversary on Annual Global Community Day

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Saturday, June 16, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Citi reinforced its ongoing and long-standing commitment to supporting and nurturing communities by marking its 200th anniversary on Saturday, June 16 with its seventh annual Global Community Day.

In India, about 5500 employees, friends, family, clients, alumni and three of Citi's partner organizations, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro and Polaris, demonstrated their commitment to make a positive difference by partnering with 50 NGOs and participating in a range of activities across 20 cities in the country. This was India's largest Global Community Day ever.

To kick-start the activities, Citi India organized a nation-wide donation drive from Monday June 11th to Friday June 15th, where individuals contributed clothes, toys, stationery and books for underprivileged children in partnership with the NGO Goonj.

On June 16th, Citi's 200th birthday and its seventh annual Global Community Day, large fundraising events were held across Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai that included NGOs selling handicrafts, jewelry, candles, stationery, garments, organic products, and also had activity stalls such as pottery painting, bangle making, and mural painting activities. All funds collected through the various activities and stalls, went directly to the NGOs present.

In addition, Citi employees engaged with underprivileged children and adults from Pratham, HelpAge India and Akshaya Patra in 16 cities, including Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Kolkata and Pune, in arts and crafts activities around the 200 year theme. In Bengaluru, employees worked at one of Akshaya Patra's mid-day meal kitchens.

"For two centuries, Citi colleagues have worked to enable economic progress and support our clients on their journey from ambition to achievement," said Citi CEO Vikram Pandit. "There is no better way to celebrate our 200th anniversary than by honoring our history, embracing the future, and working together to strengthen the communities where we live and work."

Pramit Jhaveri, CEO, Citi India said, "June 16th 2012 is an iconic milestone in our journey thus far. And I am delighted to see the dedication of our employees, friends, families, clients, alumni and partner organizations, TCS, Wipro and Polaris on this day. Moving into a new century, we are even more committed to make a positive difference to society."

Globally, 100,000 Citi volunteers, the largest number ever, participated in 1,300 service projects across 92 countries.

Global Community Day is a validation of Citi's 'more than philanthropy' approach, which encourages employees to provide their time and expertise in the areas of their interest by partnering with like-minded NGOs. In 2011, Citi India has committed approximately Rs.100 million across 12 NGOs nationally. Since 1999, Citi has supported innovative projects with over 22 NGOs across the country. During this period, Citi-funded programs have benefited more than 1.65 million economically disadvantaged families by way of enterprise development, youth education and livelihoods, financial capability and asset building, and microfinance.
