'KNOW DISASTER' Magazine Launched in Patna

Patna, Bihar, India, Thursday, March 22, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- KNOW DISASTER, a magazine dedicated exclusively to the issues of disaster preparedness and management, risk reduction and recovery was launched here today at Gandhi Maidan on Bihar Divas, amid celebrations of the Bihar Centenary Year.

The inaugural issue of the bilingual quarterly magazine in English and Hindi was jointly released by K.M. Singh, Member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Margarita Ti Leva from UNICEF and Anil Sinha, Vice Chairman, Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA).

Brought out by New Media in association with BSDMA the maiden number focuses on earthquakes, which revive memories of the worst-ever earthquake in Indian history that hit Bihar in 1934.

"Disaster preparedness is essential in Bihar to retain the economic gains the State is making under the leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The magazine, KNOW DISASTER will certainly help create awareness among the people about disaster preparedness and educate them on issues of safety," said Anil Sinha, Vice Chairman, BSDMA.

The launch of KNOW DISASTER from Patna, the capital of Bihar, is regarded appropriate, considering the fact that the State is perennially affected by floods, landslides and droughts, and can effectively educate the people on disaster preparedness.

"The joint initiative of New Media and BSDMA on the crucial issues of disaster management, risk reduction and recovery is well appreciated and very timely," said Margarita Ti Leva, adding that the magazine will help educating the people on the importance of disaster preparedness.

The focus of the inaugural issue of KNOW DISASTER is on earthquakes. Some of the articles include, the Do's and the Don'ts issued by NDMA, a remarkable study by Prof. Sandip Roy of the IIT Bombay on the Bhuj earthquake, Lessons to be Learnt from Japan, by Rajib Shaw of Kyoto University, and a cartoon feature for children about disaster preparedness.

"We took this initiative as part of our corporate social responsibility. The magazine KNOW DISASTER will disseminate the much-needed information that all stakeholders need to know and help create an environment of 'No Disasters; in Bihar", said Satya Swaroop, Managing Editor of New Media.

New Media, India's largest bilateral trade magazine publishing house, in association with the Global Forum for Disaster Reduction (GFDR), has in the recent past organized international disaster management conferences in Mumbai.
