India's First ever Legal Counsel Awards takes place in Mumbai

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Thursday, January 19, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Ideas Exchange, in association with Lex Witness, India's 1st Magazine on Legal and Corporate Affairs presented India's first ever awards to recognize and honor the excellence amongst the corporate legal fraternity - the Legal Counsel India Awards today.

The 3rd edition of The Legal Counsel Congress, India's premiere peer-to-peer- knowledge and networking exchange for the in-house legal community was organized on the 18th & 19th January 2012 at Taj Land's End in Mumbai.

The first day kicked off with an opening debate on where next for the In-house counsel community. With the motion: "From lawsuits to lawyers - GC's have finally arrived within corporate India" industry stalwarts Abhayan Jawaharlal - Head Group Legal Biocon Ltd, Vineet Vij - Head of Legal HCL Technologies Ltd., Tapan Pati - Legal Counsel Hilton Worldwide, and Y M Shivamurthy - Group President Legal & General Counsel GMR were arguing for and against the motion in a fierce debate.

The second day of the event witnessed India's first ever Legal Counsel Awards for the community. Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of the Jury MR Prasanna, a well-known Corporate Law Consultant said, "Despite the Indian legal universe being one of the highest in the world, the society didn't have a dedicated platform to appreciate their contribution. I think it is great to finally have this kind award for the in-house legal community".

A distinguished jury headed by Corporate Law Consultant - MR Prasanna, comprising eminent professionals, Anshuman Sharma - Country General Counsel Novartis, Vijaya Sampath Advisor to Group Chairman and CEO Bharti Airtel, Samuel Mani Kallupurakal - General Counsel Infosys Technologies, Girish Gokhale General Counsel JSW and Rajinder Sharma - President and Group General Counsel DuPont were present at the function and shared their thoughts in the course of the function.
