Open Source India 2011 Kick-Starts Today
The Turnout of Open Source Enthusiasts at the Event Shows the Magnitude of Growth FOSS has witnessed in the Past few Years
Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, Monday, November 21, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- Day 1 of Open Source India was enlightening, enriching and happening. There were discussions, there were workshops and there were interactions. Needless to say, all of them were aimed at increasing the usage and applicability of FOSS in individual lives as well as public platforms. The 8th edition of OSI Days, which will run through 22 November 2011, aims to strengthen and consolidate the Indian open source community. OSI 2011 witnessed a great start. The event was inaugurated by Ramesh Chopra, founder and editor, Electronics For You. Regunath Balasubramanian, principal architect of the Govt of India UIDAI project, was the guest of honour at the event.
The turnout of open source enthusiasts at the event proved the magnitude of growth FOSS has witnessed in the past few years. All the sessions on Day 1 were jam packed. Apart from the industry experts/professionals, a lot of newbies made to the event, to have a close look and feel of the FOSS environment. And they did get a fair dose of it as well. The 'Kernel Day' session was a big hit amongst the visitors.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the event, Balasubramanian said, "Open source is not yet a mass movement in India. People want to hear success stories and replicate them. OSI Days 2011 offers a good platform for us to share success stories."
Naren Datha, researcher at Microsoft Research India, took a session on the use of OSS in WikiBhasha on Day 1 of Asia's largest open source convention. WikiBhasha is a content creation tool for Wiki sites and enables easy creation of multilingual content by means of translation. Datha said, "I am a research developer at Microsoft and people thought Microsoft was using WikiBhasha exclusively. It took time to create awareness that WikiBhasha is not exclusive to MS and this was also one of the company's exercises to create awareness about openness of Microsoft. The software is built with JavaScript. WikiBhasha is freely available for use or improving Wikipedia."
Yet another speaker whose session was a hit was Mishi Choudhary. She spoke at length about legal issues involved in using and distributing software that contains open source, associated licence obligations, and implementation of an open source compliance programme. She is the director of international practice at Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) in New York and executive director of New Delhi-based sflc.in. "FOSS (free and open source software) compliance is simple and important, and is available in India. The model has moved to multi-source development, and so, it is important to understand obligations to avoid legal costs, reputation and business costs," Choudhary shared at the three-day convention.
Day 2: OSI 2011 (A GLIMPSE)
Day 2 of OSI 2011 (http://2011.osidays.com/) will be big for PHP developers as they get to hear Zeev Suraski, the lead contributor to PHP. Suraski and Andi Gutmans developed the foundation for PHP 3. The new version was a turning point for the language, which today powers over 20 million websites including Facebook and Yahoo! and enjoys a following of over 5 million developers. Zeev spearheaded the PHP 4 project, the version that tipped PHP to become the most popular Web development platform in the world, and later contributed to the PHP 5 project. Suraski will deliver keynote titled Introducing phpcloud.com - the best way to develop and deploy PHP Applications in Cloud. Luminaries like Ben Schooley, Sue Feldman, Bastian Feder, Sebastian Bergmann and many more will be present to share their enriching thoughts and experiences in the world of PHP.
In addition, there would be Database Track and Web Development section to watch out for.
