Global Convergence on the Assessment of Biosafety of GM Foods
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, Monday, October 17, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- For over a decade, Sathguru Management Consultants' Center for Executive Education and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, delivered a series of executive development programs with the view to improve management dynamics among senior managers, policy makers and academics from both the private and the public sector in India and abroad. These programs cover a range of sectors such as agriculture, food, life sciences and hospitality.
Recent advances in transgenic research have introduced a wide variety of useful agricultural innovations such as nutritionally enhanced crops and genetic modification of plant varieties for greater resistance to pests and diseases, and for increased tolerance to drought and to soils contaminated with high concentrations of salt or heavy metals. While not the magic bullet that can singly solve the complex problems of hunger and poverty, such technologies have the potential to play a major role in alleviating hunger and malnutrition in emerging economies. It is therefore essential to assess the prospects of agricultural biotechnology and set up effective biosafety systems to regulate it so as to protect consumers and the environment as well as to ensure safe access to new products and technologies developed in-country or elsewhere.
In this backdrop, the Center for Executive Education identified the need for a Global Biosafety Management Program that would provide participants with a firm grounding in new trends in biosafety management and help them evolve efficient biosafety management protocols to ensure the development of a safe product. The intensive three day program held from 3 to 5 October 2011 was inaugurated with a keynote address by Dr. R. R. Hanchinal, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, a major center for excellence in the area of agricultural biotechnology research in India. It featured presentations from an eminent faculty comprising industry experts, government policy makers from several countries, scientists and academics from India and abroad who covered topics such as
-- Best practices in translational research,
-- Regulations for transgenic crop development, commercialization and GM foods,
-- Strategic risk management in transgenic products,
-- Strategies for effective and safe deployment of transgenic biotechnology,
-- Mechanisms for partnerships in safe and useful transgenic research and more
through a series of interactive lectures, case studies and panel discussions over the intensive five days of the program. The participants, including a large delegation from Africa, USA, Bangladesh, the Philippines, India and Indonesia, involved themselves actively in the post presentation and panel discussions.
