Awareness is the key to curb Breast Cancer - Suneeta Reddy, Apollo Hospitals

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, October 21, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- October is the breast cancer awareness month and is dedicated to increasing awareness about breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection. Commemorating the Breast Cancer Awareness month, Ms Suneeta Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals, feels that every woman should contribute to the cause and spread awareness among women of all age groups.

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies affecting women. According to recent research data, over 16 percent of Indian women in the age group of 40-60 years face a potential risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer to become the leading site of cancer in metro cities and is expected to double by 2015.

Ms Suneeta Reddy said, "Being a woman I feel that early detection and preventive health checks for breast cancer can save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Detecting cancer early is the most effective way of fighting it. Getting routine check-ups doen and following recommended tests such as mammography and MRIs are very important in the prevention of the disease. It is always beneficial to take advantage of the newest scientific technologies available in securing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle."

"Changing lifestyle along with work stress has become one of the most common reasons for the spread of breast cancer in India. The need of the hour is to educate the women community about the risk factors, the vital importance of early detection, prevention and how to deal with breast cancer" she added.
