South Africa to follow "Amul" Model
"Amul" Model - Best for poverty alleviation

Anand, Gujarat, India, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- H.E. Rev. (Mr.) Harris Sithembile Majeke, High Commissioner of South Africa to India and Mr. Mvuyo Mhangwane, Counselor - Political visited Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), Anand and Amul Dairy, Anand on 27th September 2011 to understand the "Amul" model of dairy Co-operatives.

The dignitaries met Shri R S Sodhi, Managing Director and other senior officials of GCMMF. The delegation also noted the impressive growth achieved by GCMMF which is now 10,000 crores (2 billion USD) entity.

They were impressed with the model which is not only brings happiness to 3.1 million milk producers of Gujarat but also brings cheers to milk producers in rest of India as "Amul" model has been successfully replicated in other parts of the country through the Operation Flood programme.

The dignitaries were briefed on the history of Amul and vital role played by Dr. V Kurien, the father of White Revolution in building of this movement.

During his visit to Amul Dairy, H.E. Rev. (Mr.) Harris Sithembile Majeke quoted "This is quite an experience and this must be replicated in South Africa. This is the answer to poverty problems facing by our communities. What a lesson to be learnt that from humble beginning you can change the face of the world. This makes life very meaningful and is a realisation of a dream. You need to dream and wake - up to realize your dream".

H.E. Rev. (Mr.) Harris Sithembile Majeke also added that they would need support of knowledge sharing from GCMMF so that the model can be replicated in South Africa. Shri R S Sodhi, MD, GCMMF said that our farmers would be happy to share knowledge and skill to any farmer of the world without any expectations and assured all possible help from the network of institution in Gujarat.

H.E. Rev. (Mr.) Harris Sithembile Majeke quoted the similarities in views of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela that the rural development is the key to prosperity of the country and Amul has demonstrated that in Gujarat.
