TERI-BCSD Organizes the eleventh "Talking Tomorrow" Industry Series on Sustainability with Ingersoll Rand
Ingersoll Rand global sustainability expert Mr. Scott Tew speaks on 'Advancing Sustainability-Trends and Economic Implications'
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, August 11, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- Ingersoll Rand, a world leader in creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and efficient environments and the TERI Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) India organized the eleventh edition of the "Talking Tomorrow" series of industry lectures. Mr. Scott Tew, Executive Director, Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at Ingersoll Rand was invited to speak on "Advancing Sustainability - Trends and Economic Implications."
"Talking Tomorrow" is a 'by-invitation' series of lectures by eminent experts from across the globe in the field of sustainable development and its social and economic impact on the global business environment. In the past, the event has been attended by senior government officials, industry leaders, academicians and heads of multilateral/ bilateral institutes like Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Prof. Richard C Levin, President, Yale University; Mr. Stephen Green, Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings Plc to name a few.
As the guest speaker, Mr. Tew discussed recent trends in the energy efficiency and sustainability space that the Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability (CEES) at Ingersoll Rand has been identifying through a variety of methods. CEES is a global group of experts dedicated to integrating best practices for the long-term use of energy and other resources - for the company, its customers and the society at large. CEES recently supported a global competition to build a $300 dollar house for emerging economies like India. Some of the other activities that CEES has been engaged in are corporate benchmarking for sustainability and energy efficiency, participation in global policy and technology development forums, and a unique and independent building executives survey among others. In his first ever lecture in India, Mr. Tew shared the Center's findings and showed how they can directly and indirectly impact the environment, consumers, and corporate sector profitability.
Talking about the trends and economic implications of sustainability issues across the globe Tew said, "Most global companies now realize that sustainable policy development doesn't have to come at a cost to business. Rather, policy can actually create opportunity. Driving increasing standards through responsible policy and increasing incentives for energy efficiency investments benefits everyone. A recent Economist Intelligence Unit survey of global C-level executives sponsored by Ingersoll Rand showed that nearly 80% of executives believe energy efficiency will be more important to their business in five years. The survey also interestingly highlighted that regulation will actually create a level playing field across geographies and help develop new markets. We at Ingersoll Rand India are focused to develop more progressive regulations that help the private sector create new solutions for other businesses and consumers that are in high demand today."
Mr. Venkatesh Valluri, Chairman & President, Ingersoll Rand India added, "Corporate sustainability involves integrating sustainability management into the core business strategy in order to achieve a sustainable development of both economy and society. Through our innovations, dedication to corporate citizenship and sustainability, Ingersoll Rand seeks to create a positive impact on societies around the world. Additionally, the CEES at Ingersoll Rand enables external partners and alliances to work with us taking environmental expertise to the customer and also rolling it out across our own operations."
Mr. Tew's talk was followed by a high level panel discussion of eminent experts including Dr. R. K. Pachauri, President, TERI-BCSD India & Director-General, TERI, Mr. Venkatesh Valluri, Chairman & President, Ingersoll Rand India, Shri Devender Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, Mr. Manit Rastogi, Managing Director, Morphogenesis. The session was chaired by Mr Nitin Desai, Chairman, TERI-BCSD India & Former Under Secretary General of the United Nations.
