IDFC's Central Data Center Awarded the Coveted Uptime Institute Tier III design Certification, First in the Financial Services Sector


Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, May 16, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- IDFC is the 1st Financial Services company in India to be awarded the Tier III Design certification for their Central Data Center by the well recognized Uptime Institute. A Tier III Certification signifies true 24×7 availability as the data centers are designed specifically to ensure that no downtime occurs due to equipment maintenance or replacement.

Explaining the need for a Tier III data center certification, V C Kumanan, Senior Director - IT for IDFC says, "We were looking at centralizing IT operations for our critical financial service applications to our primary data center. Getting our data center Tier III certified ensures that an appropriate mechanism is established by choice and thereby provides such an assurance."

It was in the June 2010, that IDFC explored the idea of getting its data center facility Tier III design certified. The company analyzed the data center tier standards from Uptime Institute and concluded that a Tier III data center certification was best suited for their requirements. According to Kumanan while the Tier III certification would help the organization ensure an assured uptime of 99.982 %, making design changes to the data center facility to meet the Tier III data center specifications looked feasible from an operational, time and cost point of view.

These Certifications demonstrate that the Tiers are both applicable and recognizable around the world. The Tier system allows comparison and recognition of data center strength and sophistication that transcend borders or time zones. Tier Certification is a third-party, unbiased validation of a data center's capability to perform maintenance or respond to a fault without affecting the data center's availability.

The design document went through two reviews before it finally got a Tier III data center design certification from the Uptime Institute. Making design changes to an existent and operational data center is challenging since each change has to be evaluated carefully to understand the operational, structural, financial and time implications.

Besides the assurance of adherence to a global best standard, the process provides value for investment as there is a predictable high uptime and consequently stakeholder satisfaction added Mr. Kumanan.
