Important Messages Given at Sparta Strategy & Financial Times Event - Tackling India's Highway Challenge Conference - India

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Thursday, February 10, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- "It is a matter of pleasure that the 'Financial Times' in collaboration with Sparta Strategy, has organised an event and provided an opportunity through this forum for dicussing "India's Highway Challenge: Connect, Invest & Build".

Government of India has a positive approach towards the private sector and has already taken a lot of positive initiative in this regard and addressd the concern of the private sector. India offers a several fiscal incentives for the concessionaries, leaders/investors and a whole lot of incentives by way of VGF, waiver of important duties on modern and high capacity road construction equipments, facilitations of land acquisitions by way of state support agreements etc.

There is growing realization in India that if the scale of infrastructure creation is to be maintained. Then, Private Public Partnership (PPP) will be the predominant mode of execution. Therefore, in the light of this, I hope and believe that best brains from around the Globe would consider these aspects and do brainstorming in the forum to evolve fine strategies to help India in tracking its challenge in building its Highways infrastructure expeditiously." C. P. Joshi, Minister of Road Transport & Highway - Government of India.

"At the outset, I thank Financial Times and Sparta Startegy for inviting me as Chief Guest at the conference. I am pleased to see the keen interest and initiative of these institutions to tackle with the problems in creating Roads infrastructure. This initiative might be the first of its kind in thi sector and I am sure the panel discussions might have given you a broad idea about the Indian roads programme, its strengths and future requirements.

India's network of Roads, railways and ports is one of the largest in the world serving a land mass of 3.3 million square km and a population of over one billion Roads create the paths of success for every person. Wealth does not create roads, but roads create wealth. Roads are like lines of fate on the nation's plan. They are our lifelines recent industry reports indicate that needs india needs to invest around 300 billion USD in urban infrastrcutre in the next 20 years.

Maharashtra has attracted the highest FDI of about 2.67 billion USD during the first half of 2010-11 accounting for 34 percent of total FDI in the country during the period. According to experts good infrastructure has made it a consistently attractive destination also traffic intensity on roads in the State has increased remarkably due to industrial growth prevalent in the tier 2 and 3 cities of the State.

As Minister of Public works department, I am gald to tel all of you that the total length of roads in Maherashtra is 2.37 lakh kilometres of all categories including national highways, state highways and major distruct roads. We are intending to develop a road network in a grid pattern throughout the length and breadth of Maharashtra so as to achieve faster communication.

Maharashtra pioneered the development of infrastructure through PPP by comleting mega projects like Mumbai -Pune expressway, bandra worli sea link. Also being Tourims Minister I would like to tewll all that we celebrate 2011 as tourism year and are coming up with new plans to boost tourism in the State. I thank FT and Sparta Strategy and hope the next time you will come with a day long conference . I wish you good luck in your endeavour." Chhagan Bhujbal, Minister PWD & Tourism - Government of Maharashtra.
