Several experts from the internet and mobile industry got together at the 3rd National Conference on Digital Commerce, organised by IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India) and eBay in Mumbai recently, and deliberated on how Digital Commerce has come of age while also elaborating on various factors associated with it. Realising the importance of the subject for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, IndiaMART.com, India's largest B2B marketplace, associated itself with the Conference. The Conference brought forward different facets of digital commerce in India.
The eminent dignitaries present at the event included Jean Francois Van Kerkhove, Vice President- Strategy, eBay Inc; Mr. Dinesh Agarwal, Founder & CEO, IndiaMART.com; Mr. Anupam Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director, People Group; Mr. Rajesh Agrawal, Secretary, Agriculture, Dairy, Development, Fisheries and Animal Husbandary, Government of Maharashtra; among others. There were several panel discussions held as part of the Conference.
Speaking as part of the panel discussion on "Digital Commerce has come of age", Mr. Dinesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO, IndiaMART.com, said, "B2B Marketplaces are successful e-commerce enablers and have redefined the business dynamics in the country. They are providing much-required fillip to the MSMEs." On the way forward for Digital Commerce, he said, "Digital Commerce possesses the potential to connect small towns and rural areas, which is a crucial area for further growth."

Shedding light on the modes to adopt e-commerce, Mr. Anupam Mittal shared that a key challenge which digital commerce companies are facing today is to make the consumers comfortable with the medium. He said, "Lot of people are still not completely aware of and comfortable with using the digital medium. We, companies and the government, have to walk together to drive broadband penetration through consumer marketing."
Mr. Jean-Francois Van Kerckhove, Vice President - Strategy, eBay Inc. shared, "India is presently at a major inflection point as far as e-commerce is concerned. It is extremely important to ensure that broadband and mobile spread is increased so as to ensure that a much-needed impetus is given to the e-commerce sector. Also a set of business-friendly regulations will help in driving web adoption that will in turn drive online commerce."
The Conference was highly acclaimed by around 350 delegates present there. It underlined the importance of exploring Digital Commerce for businesses across sectors.
