Dell Announces Initiatives and Incentives to Encourage Green Behavior in Consumers
Dell Launches Discount Coupons to Encourage PC Recycling in India; Dell announces their Go Green Challenge
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, March 04, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Dell has introduced two new initiatives designed to promote a green approach towards technology adoption for consumers in India - discount coupons and the Dell Go Green Challenge. These initiatives are the latest in Dell's mission to make "being green" easy and cost-effective for customers.
The News:
Recycling Discount Coupon - To encourage PC recycling among its consumers, consumers in India who send their old systems to Dell for free recycling will be eligible for special discount coupons toward the purchase of their next Dell system. This coupon, offering a discount of Rs. 1000, may be used toward the purchase of any Dell system purchased directly from Dell for any of its product lines. Available globally, Dell has now extended its free recycling program for consumers in India to accept computers from any vendor.
Dell Go Green Challenge - Dell has launched the 'Dell Go Green Challenge' in an effort to raise awareness and community involvement in green initiatives in India. The challenge invites users to share photographs, videos and other innovative depictions of key issues, concerns or thoughts on green technology at www.dellgogreen.com. The contest will run for two months, during which the community will vote for their favourite entries. Additionally, the forum will offer a platform for the green enthusiasts to gather in the virtual space and share ideas, thoughts and visions on the issue. The 20 entries receiving the most votes from the community will be recognized online and through small gifts while a panel of judges, selected for their longstanding commitment to environmental concerns, will decide the three winning entries. Panelists include:
-- Mike H. Pandey - Filmmaker and conservationist
-- Ravi Agarwal - Toxiclinks (non-governmental organization)
-- Sudhanshu - British Council Library
-- Mohan Kannan - Lead singer of the band Agnee
The winning entry will receive a Dell Inspiron 14" laptop, the first runner up will receive a Dell Mini and the second runner up, the Dell Inspiron Zino.
Fulfilling a Commitment
-- Dell aims to make "being green" easy and cost-effective for its customers
-- In May 2009, Dell became the first major computer manufacturer to ban the export of non-working electronics to developing countries as part of its global policy on responsible electronics disposal. Dell's electronics disposition policy now exceeds requirements of the Basel Convention, which bans the export of certain electronic waste based on its material or chemical composition. By expanding its definition of electronic waste to include all non-working parts or devices, irrespective of material composition, Dell aims to help prevent the unauthorized dumping of electronic waste in developing countries by requiring that equipment be tested and certified as "working" prior to export.
-- In 2009, Dell began shipping netbooks in packaging made from bamboo, a highly renewable alternative to molded paper pulp, foams and corrugate often used in packaging. The company plans to expand our use of bamboo packaging to more products in 2010.
-- In August 2008, Dell announced that it had met its goal of operational carbon neutrality five months ahead of schedule through a combination of operational efficiencies, greater investment in green power and responsible offsets to cover remaining impacts. Dell sources about 35 percent of its U.S energy use from green power and approximately 26 percent globally, and it offers free computer recycling to consumer worldwide.
-- Dell was recently recognized as 'the greenest major computer company' in the electronics category of Greenopia's 2010 Green Brands list. Dell also ranked No.1 in the Technology Business Research's (TBR) 2009 sustainability index benchmark report. TBR is recognized as one of the leading high-tech market research and consulting firms specializing in the analyses of computer, software, networking equipment, wireless, portal and professional services companies, as well as customer satisfaction studies.
These initiatives reflect Dell's long-standing commitment to responsibly and efficiently manage and recycle technology.
Quote:
Mahesh Bhalla, Executive Director and General Manager - Consumer, Dell India: "As one of the world's leading providers of technology, we recognize our responsibility to ensure that technology is recycled at the end of its usable life. Dell was in fact the first computer company to offer consumer free recycling worldwide and both these initiatives are designed to create awareness among consumers on recycling of PCs in India."
