ICWAI Golden Jubilee Meet Starts in the City
"Non-Inclusive Growth will Stymie Pace of Economic Progress," Warns Mr. Ravi Chopra, Chairman and MD of Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd.

Pune, Maharashtra, India, Thursday, January 29, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- "If the concept of inclusive growth presupposes overall growth of all sections of the society, India is still some distance away from achieving it. If the entire social spectrum of the society is not taken into account while planning for further economic progress, the pace of this progress will be hampered," said Mr. Ravi Chopra, Chairman and managing director of Piaggio Vehicles India Private Limited on Thursday.

Mr. Chopra was addressing a gathering of cost accountants as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the Golden Jubilee National Conference of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI). Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune Dr. Ashok Kolaskar inaugurated the three day conference, put together by the Pune Chapter of the institute and its Western Region.

ICWAI President Mr. Kunal Banarjee, Chairman of the Golden Jubilee National Convention 2009 Committee Mr. Sanjay Bhargave and Co- Chairman Mr. Ashok Nawal were present on the occasion.

Mr. Chopra said that because a number of sections of the society are not included in the planning process for economic progress, the void between the poor and the rich is widening. Inequitable application of the country's natural and human resources has created a scenario where there are people in India who are among the riches in the world and also the poorest, Mr. Chopra said. "The country must speed up economic reforms harnessing optimally the resources," Mr. Chopra stressed.

Dr Kolaskar said India should exploit the opportunity presented by the present global slowdown. The current scenario demands a thorough redefinition of the country's entrepreneurship potential, encouragement to basic research and participation of every section of the country's population.

Mr. Kolaskar exhorted ICWAI and its members to be a guiding light for the new generation creators of wealth. An all-round effort to educate people about the best application of their capabilities alone can be the mantra to inclusive growth, Mr Kolaskar added.

ICWAI President Mr. Kunal Banarjee stressed upon the changing role of cost accountants in the country's enterprise governance. He informed the audience that the Chartered Institute of Management Acountants of U.K. has recognized the qualification conferred by ICWAI as equivalent to their qualification. Similar recognition from the United States Management Accountants Institute is also on cards and MoU with Canada for mutual recognition is also expected, he added. Mr. Banarjee informed that ICWAI has promoted an Institute of Management Accountants in Oman.

"Initiatives such as statutory cost reporting, cost accounting or concurrence to the annual audit of companies from cost accountants will help prepare a base for enterprise governance which will lead to protection of interests of consumers, shareholders, taxpayers and society at large," Mr. Banarjee elaborated.

A special souvenir published by the ICWAI as well as books written by its members V.S. Date and C.S. Chava were released on the occasion. Sanjay Bhargave delivered the welcome speech. Narhar Nimkar proposed the vote of thanks.
