In the view of this, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Électricité de France (EDF) organised a workshop today to strategise and tap the opportunities for large scale deployment of Smart Grids. Held in the sidelines of TERI's annual flagship event The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, the workshop saw participation of experts from the regulatory commissions, public and private sector utilities, project developers, academia, and R&D institutions.
Talking about opportunities for renewable energy sources in smart grid, Dr Leena Srivastava, Executive Director, TERI & Acting Vice Chancellor, TERI University, said, "Smart grids are one of the technical options that can contribute in meeting the Millennium Development Goals and issues related to climate change".
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sunil Felix, Nuclear Counsellor, French Embassy in India said, "Smart grid initiatives are absolutely crucial to ensure better grid reliability and stability for the consumers". He further added that deployment of smart grids would not only lead to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but would also help in reducing the environmental impacts of energy."
Speaking on the occasion Ms. Claude Nahon, Senior Vice-President, Sustainable Development, EDF Group said, "If we want renewable energy sources to play a big role in our energy mix then we need to introduce some intelligence in the way we use them through smart grids."
Panelists discussed the huge potential for smart grid initiatives in the country and the challenges that are likely to be dealt with. Perceptions of smart grid may vary from user to user, thus it is important to identify and prioritize the same. Public acceptance is also an important requirement.
The workshop emphasised the need for disseminating the experience (both national and international) and offered a platform to discuss the emerging opportunities in the field of smart grids.

Crowcon's Gas Detectors Ensure Safe Operation at Oil and Gas Terminal in Rajasthan
100 Nimbus flameproof (Exd) detectors supplied Cairn Energy's Mangala processing facility
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- 100 of Crowcon's Nimbus flameproof (Exd) hydrocarbon gas detectors have been installed at Cairn Energy's Mangala oil and gas processing terminal in Rajasthan, India. Supplied via Larson & Toubro, the Nimbus units are located at strategic locations throughout the facility and ensure the safety of workers and equipment by detecting elevated levels of flammable hydrocarbon gases.
"Hydrocarbon gas detectors are required by local legislation," commented Crowcon's Indian distributor, Mr Kishore Degwekar of Detection Instruments Pvt. Ltd. "Larsen and Toubro, our customer, purchased the Nimbus detectors as they are certified by the Indian Directorate General of Mines Safety".
Crowcon's Nimbus gas detectors have an excellent 10-year proven track record and, as well as having local certification, are also ATEX and UL certified. The detector is also assessed to the globally recognised functional safety standard IEC61508 and is suitable for use as part of SIL 2 systems.
Many thousands of Nimbus detectors are installed in locations across the globe, in all climatic conditions, such as the north of Sweden with its sub-zero winters, the deserts of Qatar, where summer temperatures can exceed 50oC and where sandstorms are common, and hot and very humid regions such as Malaysia.
It is used in all manner of locations, including underground tunnels, oil and gas rigs, oil and gas refineries, over-ground pipelines, compressor stations, turbine halls, pumping stations, sewage works, chemical works, aerosol filling plants, floating production ships (FPSO's) and power stations.
Designed to be integrated with existing gas detection systems, Nimbus can be used in conjunction with digital communication networks (via RS-485 Modbus) or conventional 4-20mA control systems such as Crowcon's Gasmonitor.
Rated to IP67, Nimbus functions in even the dirtiest conditions. The optics operate at up to 90% obscuration, with a dirty optics warning light activating at 75% obscuration. An external status light indicates whether the unit is in normal function or fault, alerts users to rising gas levels, and also identifies 22 further conditions for simple diagnosis.

100 Nimbus flameproof (Exd) detectors supplied Cairn Energy's Mangala processing facility
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- 100 of Crowcon's Nimbus flameproof (Exd) hydrocarbon gas detectors have been installed at Cairn Energy's Mangala oil and gas processing terminal in Rajasthan, India. Supplied via Larson & Toubro, the Nimbus units are located at strategic locations throughout the facility and ensure the safety of workers and equipment by detecting elevated levels of flammable hydrocarbon gases.
"Hydrocarbon gas detectors are required by local legislation," commented Crowcon's Indian distributor, Mr Kishore Degwekar of Detection Instruments Pvt. Ltd. "Larsen and Toubro, our customer, purchased the Nimbus detectors as they are certified by the Indian Directorate General of Mines Safety".
Crowcon's Nimbus gas detectors have an excellent 10-year proven track record and, as well as having local certification, are also ATEX and UL certified. The detector is also assessed to the globally recognised functional safety standard IEC61508 and is suitable for use as part of SIL 2 systems.
Many thousands of Nimbus detectors are installed in locations across the globe, in all climatic conditions, such as the north of Sweden with its sub-zero winters, the deserts of Qatar, where summer temperatures can exceed 50oC and where sandstorms are common, and hot and very humid regions such as Malaysia.
It is used in all manner of locations, including underground tunnels, oil and gas rigs, oil and gas refineries, over-ground pipelines, compressor stations, turbine halls, pumping stations, sewage works, chemical works, aerosol filling plants, floating production ships (FPSO's) and power stations.
Designed to be integrated with existing gas detection systems, Nimbus can be used in conjunction with digital communication networks (via RS-485 Modbus) or conventional 4-20mA control systems such as Crowcon's Gasmonitor.
Rated to IP67, Nimbus functions in even the dirtiest conditions. The optics operate at up to 90% obscuration, with a dirty optics warning light activating at 75% obscuration. An external status light indicates whether the unit is in normal function or fault, alerts users to rising gas levels, and also identifies 22 further conditions for simple diagnosis.

SMART Log Helping Fight Leaks for British Water Utility
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- A major project to fight leakage by British utility company Yorkshire Water is using HWM's Radio-Tech SMART Log wireless datalogging automatic meter reader (AMR) to significantly reduce the time and cost taken to find and fix leaks in the network. The SMART Logs are being installed by Vernon Morris & Co. Ltd. along with its Incertameter 'bolt-on' in-line flow meter, enabling Yorkshire Water to split 250 of its existing DMAs* in half for more efficient water management - without the need for constructing any new, expensive metered bypasses. The initial phase includes 350 installations, with more planned to follow as the project rolls out across the network.
Dividing a water mains network into DMAs is current water loss prevention best practice. It allows water companies to examine their network in small pieces, narrowing down areas where water is being lost so that leakage teams can then pinpoint the location within that DMA. Obviously, smaller DMAs result in more detailed initial information, and proportionally less time taken to identify the exact position of the leak; in these cases time equals not only money but also water, personnel and the chances of a severe service disruption.
SMART Log and Incertameter allow for the easy and very cost-effective creation of more and smaller DMAs, and very rapid collection of data from them. SMART Log's wireless technology means that data collection teams no longer need access to the meter itself, but instead can download the data via a secure wireless link from up to 100 meters away - even from a moving vehicle. This drastically reduces the time taken for data gathering, which, in addition to the use of smaller DMAs, results in impressive savings.
In a series of blind pilot trials conducted last year to compare the before and after effects of the project, results indicated an average saving per leak of roughly 60 hours of detection time and over £1500, even without factoring in the initial saving of £5000+ per sub-metering point created. Leakage inspectors can expect to cover a DMA approximately five times faster than before, and prioritise their leak repair activities much more effectively according to the severity of a leak and its impact on the water supply.
Advanced technology not only enables this level of functional efficiency, but has resulted in an impressive battery life for the systems. Batteries last for 5 years with a 5 minute sample rate, meaning that the time and cost savings first made at the installation continue on for half a decade. Suitable for use with automatic and manual loading bay doors, Salvo Control Panel+ (SCP+) is easier both to use and install.
Fast, safe access is an important issue in the loading bay environment. The Salvo system, as reported by existing users, already delivers operating efficiencies in terms of visually indicating loading bay availability, reducing needless waiting time and confirming the presence of trucks ready for loading or unloading. The new SCP+ increases operational efficiency still further with the addition of an illuminated lock; in 24/7 operating environments this feature helps drivers locate the lock portion faster and therefore saves time.
Since Salvo is a global product, with installations across five continents, the operating instructions on the SCP+ have been redesigned to allow understanding regardless of local language. The instructions are now entirely visual, enabling drivers to follow them on the panel, and reducing the time taken by new drivers to understand and operate the system.
The safety function of the control panel has also been enhanced and now features forcibly guided safety relays that deliver a higher level of safety functionality.
SCP+ has also been designed for simpler installation. A new ergonomic enclosure allows for fast access to the electrical terminals and reduces wiring time. As a further development, SCP+ is also multi-voltage and suitable for 24V AC, 24V DC, 110V AC or 230V AC supply. Finally, the panel has been designed using the same footprint and so can be retrofitted easily.
To combat environmental temperatures ranging from the extreme highs of Africa to the biting colds of North America and Russia, SCP+ can be fitted with an internal heater.

Host Borough School Children Get Set to Perform in London 2012 Ceremonies
London, United Kingdom, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- To mark 6 months to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has today announced that the under 16s Volunteer Performer Cast for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be selected from schools in the six Host Boroughs in the Get Set Network, part of the official London 2012 education programme and incorporating the Olympic and Paralympic Values into their curriculum.
18 primary and 7 secondary schools in the six Host Boroughs have been involved in an audition process for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony involving children aged 7-9 years and 11-13 years. In total 1,650 children auditioned for the London 2012 Ceremonies Mass Movement Team, undertaking large scale choreography as well as dance routines. More than 900 children will be selected over the coming weeks to perform in the Opening Ceremony on July 27th 2012, watched by 80,000 people in the Olympic Stadium and a worldwide TV audience of over a billion people.
For the selected children there will be between 15 and 20 rehearsals taking place initially at the selected schools, then in East London at London 2012 Ceremonies rehearsal sites and finally in the Olympic Stadium. LOCOG is providing transport between the schools and the rehearsal venues for the young people.

TERI Organises 4th YUVA Meet on "Conserving Global Commons: Transforming Knowledge into Action'
Meet aimed at understanding ways to conserve global commons and mobilise youth in taking constructive steps
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The world today is grappling with serious issues of Climate Change with far-reaching consequences for our forthcoming generations. Until now, much emphasis has been laid on understanding atmospheric and scientific changes resulting from climate change. This annual meet for the youth, aims to provide them with a holistic overview of the emerging environmental challenges and to encourage them to play a vital role in spreading awareness on key environment concerns and collectively voice their views and exchange ideas.

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO), Japan organised a conference today titled 4th India Japan Energy Forum - Business opportunities in Energy Efficiency and Renewables. The conference focussed on technological options for enhancing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy technologies.
The Forum provided an excellent opportunity for Indian and Japanese industries to dialogue, debate and share their experiences. The conference envisaged capitalisation of cross-learnings thus ensuring mutual benefits and promotion of bilateral relations between the two nations.

Speaking on the need to improve the accessibility of clean energy, Mr BK Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India, said, "India needs to plan for energy efficiently, as still a large body of our population still doesn't have access to clean energy. Planning Commission is making its next 12th five-year plan, and we have simultaneously planned for energy requirements, primarily power. Deliberations today will surely help improve us in the Planning Commission, for the betterment of the country."

The donation supports The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) Lighting a Billion Lives program giving non-polluting & reliable solar lighting to about 2,500 villagers and reducing CO2 emissions by 750 tonnes over the solar lantern's useful life of 10 years
Broomfield, Colorado, United States, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- MWH Global, a sustainable engineering company, today announced a $50,000 USD donation to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), an India-based, non-profit research organization focused on finding solutions for critical energy, environmental and sustainable development issues. The funds will directly support TERI's Lighting a Billion Lives program that aims to bring light into the lives of rural communities through solar lighting.
In India alone, 61 million rural households use kerosene and wicker lamps for lighting. Inadequate lighting has a direct impact on the livelihood, health, environment and safety of these rural residents. Lighting a Billion Lives, a program that launched in 2008, sets up a solar charging station in energy poor villages and offers certified, bright and quality solar lanterns for rent to the local community. Sify Reports Revenues of INR 1.80 Billion for Third Quarter of Fiscal Year 2011-12
EBITDA for the Quarter Stood at INR 136 Million, up 46% Over Same Quarter Previous Year
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Monday, January 30, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ Global Markets: SIFY), a leader in Managed Enterprise, Network and ICT Services in India with growing global delivery capabilities, today announced its consolidated results under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for the third quarter of fiscal year 2011-12.
Performance Highlights Q 3 FY 11-12:
- Revenues for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 was INR 1805 million. ·
- Revenue from Enterprise services was at INR 1526 million, up approximately 5% and from Software services was INR 182 million, up approximately 16% over same quarter last year.
- Revenue from Commercial and Consumer services was INR 97 million for the third quarter.
- EBITDA for the quarter increased to INR 136 million, as compared to INR 93 million in the same quarter previous year.
- Net loss for the quarter reduced to INR 73 million, as against a net loss of INR 96 million in the same quarter previous year.
- Capex during the quarter was INR 225 million. Cash balance at the end of the quarter was
INR 658 million and undrawn line of credit stood at INR 335 million.

Our Cable landing Station in Mumbai is ready for operations, making Sify the first ICT company in India to own a cable landing station for international submarine cable systems. With the opening of this landing station, Gulf Bridge International (GBI) became the first to land their sub-sea cable system in India.
Sify also signed a Landing Party Agreement (LPA) with MENA Submarine Cable System S.A.E, a licensed telecommunications operator in Egypt. This Cable Landing Station positions Sify well for the growing opportunities for ICT and cloud services across the world.
In early 2011, Sify had announced a strategic investment in Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable capacities to support our expanding global operations across Europe, Middle East and Africa. We are happy to share that the EIG cable has gone live up to Europe this quarter. A US $700 million high-capacity fiber-optic cable, EIG will be the first, direct, high-bandwidth optical fiber system from the UK to India.
The State Data Centre for Kerala has gone live, making it our second on-stream State Data Centre out of a total of five we have won to-date. We are looking at consistent recurring revenues from these State Data Centres for the next 5 years.
Our strategy to drive Network, IT Services and Software as a complete portfolio of services to Enterprise customers in India and International markets, is allowing us to better capitalise our skills and service offerings.
Consistent with our strategy to develop solutions for the large and growing SMB segment, our Commercial and Consumer business continues to expand their market share in both small and medium enterprises and SOHO businesses. As targeted, most of the growth is coming from Tier II and III cities. In addition to our portfolio of network and internet services to the SMB market, we have introduced value-added IT services tailored to this market, such as Sify mystorage, our automatic backup and storage service for SOHO and SMBs.
Horizontal expansion of the services basket is also yielding good dividends for the Software services helped largely due to the demand for automation of services, both from the government and allied bodies.

TERI to Host the 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit from 2- 4 Feb 2012
Themed "Protecting the Global Commons: 20 Years Post Rio", the summit will be inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, along with 3 heads of states, dignitaries, Nobel Laureates, and ministers from 15 countries
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, January 30, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) works towards fulfilling its vision of 'working towards global sustainable development, creating innovative solutions for a better tomorrow', through its flagship event the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS). The DSDS has been held annually in New Delhi since 2001, tackling key developmental issues of the times, having emerged as the only forum on global sustainability issues, with an accentuated thrust on problems relating to the developing world. The DSDS series has enjoyed global support, from over 60 countries, attracting participation from Heads of government and ministers, and a host of other dignitaries comprising Nobel laureates, development practitioners, scientists, academics, & corporate leaders.
In its twelfth edition DSDS will focus on the theme, 'Protecting the Global Commons: 20 Years Post Rio'. Set to be inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, DSDS 2012 will be the first important meeting of global leaders preceding the June 2012, Rio+20 Summit. The June 2012 Summit marks twenty years of the 1992 Earth Summit which will witness leaders of the world come together to deliberate and devise a plan for a sustainable future. Along with the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, other dignitaries who will be at the summit are H.E. Ms. Tarja Halonen, President, Finland, H.E. Mr. Anote Tong, President, Kiribati, H.E. Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Former Prime Minister of Norway and Member of the UN Secretary General's Global Sustainability Panel, Norway, Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger, Founding Chair, R20 - Regions of Climate Change & Former Governor, California, USA, Hon'ble Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, Hon'ble Ms. Jayanthi Natarajan, Hon'ble Minister of State (I/C) for Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, Hon'ble Ms. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of NCT of Delhi, Dr. Arcot Ramachandran, Chairman, TERI, India, and Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General TERI and Chairman IPCC.
Two decades hence, time is ripe to assess the progress made in protecting our planet. DSDS 2012 will examine what has since been achieved and how awareness had been created; it will attempt to define new directions to be followed; and set an agenda for further action.
Curtain raiser to the Summit will be the World CEO Sustainability Summit which will witness an impressive congregation of business leaders and discuss targeted business and sustainability issues, under the overarching theme 'Doing Business - While Protecting the Global Commons'.

DSDS 2012 will be honoring the eighth recipient with the Sustainable Development Leadership Award which constitutes TERI's tribute to a distinguished individual's exemplary efforts. The Award celebrates individuals who have contributed substantially in combating challenges threatening sustainable development and encouraging initiatives which lead the planet towards a sustainable future. Some past winners of the Sustainable Development Leadership Awards are Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh of India, UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, and former Governor of California Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Over 20 Special events will be organized on the sidelines of the Summit. Consistent with and central to the main theme of DSDS 2012 these platforms will provide an opportunity to distinguished speakers and area experts to discuss niche topics.
