BMGI India Presents Unlocking the Power of Lean Driven Engagement in Organizations
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Friday, September 14, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Dr Shubhrangshu Barman Roy, Principal Consultant, Breakthrough Management Group India (BMGI) and one of the keynote speakers in the Process Excellence Manufacturing Summit 2012, held in J W Marriot on the 6th& 7th September in Mumbai presented the "Roadmap to Enable &Drive a companywide, principle-based "Lean Thinking" by unlocking the power of Employee Engagement".
The event was organized by Mumbai based Goldman Communications which is an emerging and one of most preferred providers in business forums for senior decision makers. The event saw participation from thought leaders from across organizations in the process industry like Ruchi Soya, Wockhardt, Promed, HLL Lifecare, Marico, Asian Paints, S H Kelkar, Advance Surfactants, Teva, Savesta Herbals, Atul Ltd, Foseco, ZCL Chemicals, United Phosporous, Essel Propack, L'oreal, to name a few.
Dr Roy outlined on how management systems driven by principles of Lean can help companies create long-term business success and engaged employees. While the key driver for successful transformation is the maximum employees solving problems on a regular basis rather than a few selected people, the mantra for learning and growing organization is solving new problems every day and not same problems, he said.
He further added "Strategic Vision, Strategy Deployment, Ownership, Resources and Motive are the five gears that need to work together for a successful employee and organization engagement in the Business Transformation. He said that when there's an appropriate strategy, its deployment, a feeling of ownership among employees for the task at hand, sufficient resources and motivation, then an organization truly unlocks its potentials and delivers results.
Stressing the critical link between Results, Principles, Systems and tools should never be compromised, he expressed concern that the organizations today focus largely on tools to solve their problems and at times force fit the tools into their system. Shubhrangshu explained that this would not lead to a real transformation as this is like a playing a Snake and Ladder game.
He said while companies practicing lean can expect 2X-4X CAGR than the industry and three times higher productivity levels, those who have understood in parts will find it difficult to leverage the benefits of Lean. Keeping in mind the difficult economic times India is in, Dr Roy said in his presentation, "There are no fund and wealth problems, only Idea and initiative Problems". His session helped the participants to understand the importance of deploying strategy down to bottom most level in a company, where the real Value gets added and also help remove a lot of misconceptions about Lean.
"Lean is about building deep knowledge of processes not immediate countermeasures and sharing problems with people so that solutions are easily accepted & Implemented," Dr Roy said, explaining how the principle of lean management which owes its roots to practices established by Toyota Motor Corp. works to transform businesses .He signed off saying "Lean might be simple to understand but it's not easy to implement, you need a coach to guide you through this process of transformation".
Mr. Momin, Consultant, Tata Power Projects, who was anchoring the session had earlier started the conference, sharing his views on the need of process industries today to practice Operational Excellence. He shared example of Tata Chemicals and how they have been successfully driving Operational Excellence activities. He stressed on the point that Principle centred leadership was the cornerstone of any transformation and bigger challenge is to make people walk along with you towards a common goal. He was appreciative of the thought process shared by BMGI's Dr Roy and endorsed the Leadership focused transformation approach.
The next speaker, Dr. P L Narasimhan, professor at IIT Kharagpur gave an overview on driving operational excellence in the industry and how change is inevitable. His presentation primarily revolved around ways to challenge status quo in our work processes and think of improving it on a daily basis. He shared example of Arvinda Eye Care hospital, where surgeons carry out 7 times more surgeries than the best hospital in Rotterdam, using simple principles learnt from McDonalds. The biggest challenges facing us today is ability to adapt quickly to global technologies and retain capable people. One of the ways to manage skill levels within the organization is to look at de-skilling the work rather than focusing too much on improving skills.
Mr Kulbhushan Gupta, Head of business excellence at Jubilant Life Sciences, shared insights on how his company is driving Operational Excellence, which is recording almost 100% growth for the past 5 years. He shared how customized excel based programs were being used in this organization to solve business problems. With a global team of 40 internal consultants, Mr. Gupta spearheads the Transformational activities within his organization which is globally spread out. He shared how he and his team overcame shortcomings of ERP systems by using excel based programs for Demand Planning and S&OP. BMGI has worked closely with Jubilant to deliver significant results in their Operational Excellence journey
Among other eminent speakers Mr. Ekant Madaan from GSK spoke on how his company was driving operational excellence, Mr. Sasikumar from HLL Lifecare and Mr. Rajib Mehra from WIPRO automotive business, who shared implementation case studies.
